Welcome to Pasar Minggu Satok, Kuching - Part 1

Some of the items sold at Pasar Minggu Satok, Kuching

I only managed to snap a few pics since the vendors have to pack everything before 2PM. Otherwise the DBKU lorry would come & snatch their things. That sounds very awful. One Chinese vendor was angered by me b’coz I looked at his things while he did his packing. He asked whether I want to buy something. I said no & he replied – Lain kali jangan tanyalah. So I answered back – Apa marah2? Tanyapun tak boleh. Lain kali barang tak laku baru sibuk cari customers. And I walked away. My mom said – Hishhh…. to me & I saw the Chinese guy still grumbling. The time was only 12 noon & he was already packing. I saw other vendors seemed to be “relax” despite of the DBKU officers were around doing some spot checking. Maybe he was one of the illegal vendors & got panic.

I saw a few DBKU officers issuing a ticket to an illegal vendor. Again that’s so awful. I mean, these small-time vendors have small capital & the only mean to make money is to sell their products/goods at Satok Minggu Market. The poor guy was acquiring a small space at one of the parking lots. I’ve no idea at all abt the permit fee but at least they can issue a reasonable fee to these people. I should have shot the pic.

What’s even more bothering – these DBKU officers are claimed to take actions against Swak Bumi vendors only & not Chinese. Hmmmm……. I don’t really know but that is what most people have complained.

Kampung Bintangor, Kuching

A big kampung in the heart of Kuching City. Not the one across the Swak River (Petra Jaya) but in Kuching itself.

To the people of West Kalimantan

I found this booklet abt Visit Kota Singkawang. I didn’t know that Singkawang is very near to Kuching & also Sambas & Pontianak. I wish one day I can visit Sambas, Kota Singkawang & Pontianak. The journey from Kuching to those places using buses or vans would take like <10> hrs.

As you can see from the pic I pasted, the 3 ladies are representing the Chinese, the Malay & the Dayak community in West Kalimantan. Their culture is almost similar with Swak except they have Javanese/Hinduism influence. Glad to learn that. I learnt that majority of Swak Malays are originated from Sambas.

West Kalimantanese also celebrate Aidil Adha & Aidil Fitri, Chinese New Year & Chap Goh Meh, & Gawai Dayak etc. Surprisingly there’s a market named as Pasar Hongkong (Hongkong Market) located at downtown on Jln Setia Budi & the intersections somewhere in Kota Singkawang. On Chap Goh Meh celebration – the Chinese parade along the main streets. The main attraction – the Chinese showing their skills like standing on sharp things, body & face pierced/stabbed with sharp objects/weapons. It’s almost similar to Thaipusam celebration in West Malaysia.

If you love ceramics, they’re available with unique/different motifs & sold at a much cheaper price compared to the ones in Kuching, Swak. A big cool ceramic vase only costs you RM100 plus. Check that out!

PS. Allah swt. bless the people of West Kalimantan & Borneo Island. May we all live in peace & harmony; preserve our culture & our forests.

If you come to Kuching, Swak - don't forget to visit Serikin

Have you seen this? A gold keris in a crystal egg. It was sold in Serikin some time ago. I don't think you can find this crystal egg anymore in Serikin.

Serikin is located at Sarawak-Kalimantan border. Majority of the population are Bidayuhs. Serikin is famous for its stalls selling various items like foods, household goods, cosmetics, handbags, textiles, rattan furniture etc & even turtle eggs. Turtle egg is sold at RM1 per egg. Such a luxury egg.

The journey from Kuching to Serikin is abt 2 hrs or less. I don’t really know. Sorry abt that. He he he he…….. On the way to Serikin you can see interesting views like caves & man-made caves. I think so. To get good pics of the caves, you can stop by the roadside.

Some of the items displayed in one of the stalls.

Sarawak mats of different designs are popular among the tourists including Sarawakians but the ones in Serikin are Indonesian made. It's much cheaper than Sarawak made mats. Quality wise - go for Sarawak made mats & only can be found in Kuching.

PS. I'm taking a blog rest. I'll be back on Thursday.
